Urban Teacher Enhancement Program Overview

The Urban Teacher Enhancement Program (UTEP) is an initiative of UAB’s Center for Urban Education.  UTEP is designed to prepare teachers who have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to promote high student achievement in urban schools, and who have a commitment to remaining in urban schools.  UTEP is supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Education.

In order to accomplish its goals, UTEP includes the following enhancements to traditional teacher education programs:

Recruitment for urban schools

Tuition support

Urban teaching competencies

Co-taught coursework

Faculty liaisons

Enhanced field placements

Mentoring for new teachers

2009 Outstanding UTEP Scholar Awards
