Message from the Physical Education Program Area Faculty

Welcome to the UAB Physical Education Program!  We are excited to have you in our department. Physical education is a field with many career choices. Our mission is to help you find the best career for you and your interests and to educate you on the best practices in that area. Our teacher certification, exercise science, exercise physiology, and fitness leadership programs are growing strong and we are glad you are a part of that growth.

Depending upon the exact program followed, graduates of physical education and related programs will be prepared to pursue employment as physical education teachers in schools or agencies; to be fitness counselors in fitness centers, clinics, or industrial settings; or to pursue further study in biology or health-related areas. In some instances, graduate work may be required as a prerequisite for employment. Students desiring to teach physical education in schools must complete teacher certification courses in addition to other major requirements.

Physical education programs prepare teachers, fitness leaders, athletic coaches and exercise science professionals to implement developmentally appropriate physical activities that enhance the quality of life for all individuals across their lifespans. Programs are based on current research and the standards and recommendations of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
