Off campus site visits, participatory interaction, and one on one interaction with community and university personnel afford students the opportunity to associate theory with real world experiences.  These initiatives encourage student independent thinking, creativity, and a greater appreciation for learning.  Site visits have included University Hospital, UAB Career Center, John's Ridouts Funeral Home, Hanover House, Mary Lewis Convalescent Center, Birmingham Early Learning Center, and area school sites;  participatory interactive visits have included adventure based counseling initiatives; community and university personnel are listed below.

1998    Created web-site instruction (www.ed.uab.edu/counselor) along with Mr. Jeff Anderson (Academic Computing and Technology) and Dr. Rachelle Perusse    of Plattsburg State University to develop intra-institutional student relationships and to enhance student learning Guidance in Schools).

1999    Taught Multicultural Counseling for School Counselors, at Orot College, in Elkana, Israel during the month of December.

1998      Initiated and organized first Counseling Comprehensive Exam utilizing School of Education Academic Computing and Technology Computer Lab.

1998-00     Developed advisory council of Birmingham City and other area school counseling supervisors which meet three times per year.

1998      Involved in  planning with Jefferson County School System in the development of a  mentorship program for first year/new school counselors.

1998-00    Created, Developed, and Organize Counselor Awareness Month which promotes the profession of counseling through activities and workshops involving counseling education students, community counseling professionals, and the Birmingham area general public.

1998-00     Initiated and develop meetings each Spring with teachers from Birmingham City and surrounding school systems to promote school  counseling as a future career choice.

1998     Initiated discussion with individuals interested in starting a school counseling certification/Master's Degree program at Walker College in Jasper, Alabama.

1998      Attended preliminary meetings with and offered supportive assistance to the Birmingham City School System regarding the development of individual school crisis plans.

1998      Established a working relationship with Brown Elementary School in Birmingham City - developing and presenting a series of parenting workshops from February - May.  Topics included discipline, enhancing parent/child relationships, and preparing for success in middle school.  Also involved professors from other areas of the School of Education

1999    Represented the School of Education on Conflict Management proposal with the Center for Community Outreach Development(CORD), Stephen L. Hajduk, Ph.D., Director,  1998-99.

1999   Served on Executive Director Search Committee, Bessemer Family Services Council, Dr. Cecilia Pierce, Chair.

1999-00    Created and developed school counseling workshop schedule for  Birmingham area school counselors.
