Department of Human Studies, UAB School of Education
The Department of Human Studies offers programs in Counseling, Health Education, Physical Education, and Research. All programs leading to degrees and/or certificates in Counseling are graduate programs.
A number of undergraduate courses in the area of educational psychology and foundations serve as service courses for all the other departments of the School of Education.
The undergraduate student may earn a major in health education under two different programs: (1) community health or (2) 7-12 health education certification. Undergraduate students interested in physical education and/or related programs may choose among three different programs: (1) N-12 physical education certification, (2) fitness specialist (non-teaching), or (3) exercise science (non-teaching).
Students completing a program that does not include teacher certification are required to complete an approved minor (usually 18 hours) from a related field within or outside the Human Studies department. Each student is assigned an advisor by the department. The student must complete a student information form available in Room 207, Education Building, in order to be assigned a departmental advisor. The student must consult his or her advisor prior to each registration period for the appropriate guidance and signature. All undergraduate majors must be admitted to their respective programs as a prerequisite to taking upper-division major courses. Procedures are available from the departmental office.
