High School Education (EHS) Undergraduate Courses

EHS 320  Geography for Teachers - Unifying themes and concepts of geography. Culture and characteristics of places, especially as caused by relationships between humans and their environment.

 

EHS 401  Secondary Education Curriculum and Methods I - Coherent view of effective teaching and instructional design in middle and high schools. Students design lesson plans to meet needs of diverse learners.  Preq: Admission to TEP or declared education minor. Co-req: EHS 402.

 

EHS 402  Practicum I - This course and EHS 401 blend to develop a coherent view of effective teaching and instructional design in middle and high schools. Students use knowledge and skills from previous courses related to learning styles, development, and diversity to plan lessons and interact with middle/high school teachers and students, and representatives from support agencies in their environments.  Preq: Admission to TEP. Must have concurrent enrollment in EHS 401 Methods I

 

EHS 410  Measurement and Evaluation in Secondary Schools - Principles of student assessment. Prerequisites: Admission to TEP, EHS 401, and EHS 402.
 

EHS 456  Classroom Management in Secondary School - Management and instructional problems in secondary schools; techniques for improving study skills and developing better instructional planning.

 

EHS 458  Science Technology and Society: A Primer for Education - Nature of momentous changes: origin, current status, and future direction. Role of educational community in helping young people better understand and deal with various issues raised.

 

EHS 459  History and Philosophy of Mathematics - History and Philosophy of Mathematics

 

EHS 465  Secondary Math Methods - Planning and organization, methods and techniques of teaching mathematics, methods of evaluating student and teacher performance, and professional issues. Methods and techniques for teaching problem solving, using computers and calculators, meeting needs of individual students, dealing with mathematics anxiety, and using manipulative materials. Required micro-teaching and clinical experiences.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP. Corequisites: EHS 470 and 471.

 

EHS 466  Language Arts Methods - Curriculum and instruction in English/language arts. Prerequisite: Admission to TEP. Corequisites: EHS 470 and 471.

 

EHS 467  Secondary Science Methods - Teaching methods and curricula in secondary science programs.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP. Corequisites: EHS 470 and 471.

 

EHS 468  Secondary Social Science Methods - Curriculum and instruction in social studies.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP. Corequisites: EHS 470 and 471.

EHS 469  Secondary School Curriculum: Foreign Language - Approaches and methods of teaching and testing foreign language. Selection and use of audiovisual equipment and materials. Structured school observations.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP. Corequisites: EHS 470 and 471.

 

EHS 470  Practicum II - Coherent view of effective teaching and instructional design in middle and high schools. Extensive guided teaching experiences. Students implement full range of instructional process: planning, delivery, and evaluation.  Prerequisites: Admission to TEP. Corequisite: EHS 465, 466, 467, or 468.

 

EHS 471  Special Education Accommodation/Modification Lab - Lab helps students in secondary math, science, social studies, and English develop specific teaching strategies addressing special needs students included in the regular classroom. The emphasis will be on high incident special needs such as LD, EC, ADD, etc.  Prerequisite: Should be taken concurrently with EHS 465-468.

 

EHS 489  Internship Seminar in Secondary Education - Supports and extends efforts of student teaching. Problem solving related to classroom situations such as classroom management, grading, professionalism and ethics, legal issues, teacher rights, and others that occur during internship. Corequisite: EHS 490.

 

EHS 490  Secondary School Student Teaching I - Observation and teaching in secondary schools.  Prerequisites: Appropriate methods course, senior standing, and approval of application for student teaching. Co-requisite: EHS 489.
 

EHS 491  Secondary School Student Teaching II - Supervised teaching in high school.  Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and department.

 

EHS 497  Special Problems in Education - Topics of current interest. May be repeated for total of 6 hours.  Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and advisor.

 

EHS 499  Field Studies In Selected Educational Settings -  Field visits to locations of high educational impact. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and advisor.
