Barnes & Noble K-12 Grants

Through its stores, Barnes & Noble provides funding to local and regional efforts to promote literacy and the arts in K-12 education. Proposals should include a literacy or arts component that fosters both student achievement and community growth. Grant recipient must plan to promote the programs within local stores. CDC Summer Internship Program, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention

A limited number of informal unpaid internships are available in the Prevention Research Branch of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.  Students may begin a 3-month internship in May, June, or July. Interns should have some experience in systematic coding and analysis of qualitative interview data, as well as facility with basic statistics.  Experience conducting thematic literature reviews and using literature searching software is desirable.  Students should have interests and backgrounds in areas related to HIV prevention and behavioral research (for example, substance use, sexual risk behavior, gay sexuality, sexual abuse, HIV counseling and testing). For more information, contact James W. A unique fellowship opportunity providing three months of leadership training through applied research and professional mentorships to young scholar/practitioners aged 35 or younger working in the NGO sector. The topic for the 2005 program is community foundations. Fall and Spring Internships at the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP)

IHEP, a non-profit, non-partisan research and policy organization in Washington, DC, sponsors a year-round internship program for undergrads and graduate students with an interest in public policy research.  Each internship is for a full academic semester and includes a stipend of $1,500. Interns are considered members of the regular staff, providing research assistance and administrative support. Previous interns have performed library- and Internet-based research, conducted interviews on higher education policy issues, offered data analysis and other specialized assistance, and provided writing assistance on small papers and larger policy reports. Every year, NEH offers K-12 teachers the chance to participate in a series of Summer Seminars and Institutes on various topics in the humanities. Past programs have taught topics in literature, music, history, art, and cultural studies in locations like Vienna, London, NYC, Washington, Ireland, and Italy.
