Biosketch of Retta R. Evans, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Health Education
Department of Human Studies, School of Education, University of Alabama at

Education:
Dr. Evans completed her Ph.D. in Health Education with emphasis in Nutrition at
the
University of Arkansas,
in Fayetteville. She earned a master's degree from Northeastern State University
in Health/Exercise Science College Teaching and a B.S. in Exercise Science from
Fort Hays State University
in Hays Kansas.
Teaching: Dr. Evans has experience teaching a variety
of campus and
online courses
which include Nutrition and Human Performance; Contemporary Health Issues;
Community and Public School Health; Health Promotion; and Computer Applications
in Health & Human Performance. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate
courses at UAB including:
Quality of Life;
Theories and Determinants of Health Behavior;
Human Sexuality; School Health Programs; Teaching Health in the
Elementary Schools;
and
Women's Nutrition and Health across the Lifespan.
Awards: Dr Evans
received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship at UAB in 2008.
She also received the Alabama State Health Educator of the Year Award in
2008.
Research Interests: She has published widely on various topics related to youth health, body image
of adult females and health behavior change. She is a frequent presenter at
state, regional, and national professional meetings for health educators.
Academic/Research
Interest Sites
Dr. Evans has an expressed interest in using technology to enhance health
education and physical activity in the public schools. She also is involved in
grant writing endeavors focusing on obesity, physical activity and nutrition
patterns in American youth.
Service:
Dr. Evans is an active member of several state and regional committees that deal
with youth health and obesity including:
ASAHPERD - Alabama State Association - Health Education VP (2006-07),
College Council VP (2007-08)
Dr. Evans is a member of the Editorial Board of reviewers for the Alabama State
Journal for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance as well as the
Electronic Journal of Health Education.
Dr. Evans also serves on the National
AAHPERD Advocacy Committee
and the National
SOPHE planning committee.
Dr.
Evans is also an elected board member of the ASAHPERD Association

HPE 200 ~ Quality of Life:
Total health;
effects of lifestyle on total health. Decision-making skills to enable
health enhancing choices and engage in health enhancing activities to
improve and maintain health status. For education majors only. 2 hours.

HPE 301 ~ Teaching Health/P.E. in the Elem. School:
For classroom
teachers. Communicating and working with physical education specialists,
selecting developmentally appropriate activities, and integrating
movement activities and concepts into classroom subjects. Background
information and skills to implement health education in grades K-6.

HE 343 ~ Theories &
Determinants of Health Behavior:
Application of
health education theories and methods to assist individuals and groups
with planned behavior change. Basic steps of program planning and
evaluation. Required Prerequisite HE 342. 3 hours. Taught

HE 489/HE 689 ~ School Health Programs:
Students will
examine multiple methods of teaching health education in the schools.
Students will select, develop, and critique resources for health
instruction and develop unit and lesson plans to guide instruction of
children or adults. Barriers and ethical issues related to planned
health behavior change will be discussed. Students will become familiar
with Healthy People 2010: The National Health Promotion and Disease
Prevention Objectives for the Year 2010, Healthy Alabama 2010, and the
AL Course of Study: Health Education (2003). 3 hours.

Human Sexuality:
Biological, sociological, psychological, and ethical aspects of human
sexuality. Biological overview, behavioral variations, research in
sexuality, social issues, sexual decision making, sexuality of special
populations, and sexual complications. 3 hours.

HE 491/691 ~ Special Topics: Lifespan Dimensions of
Women's Health & Wellness: This course examines social and
behavioral factors that adversely affect women’s health status
throughout the lifespan. Students learn to apply gender specific
theories to design health interventions tailored towards women. 3
