Tommy Smith, PhD

Dr. Tommy Smith is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education in the UAB School of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Smith is a Co-Principal Investigator in the EdGrid Program and GK-12 Graduate Teaching Fellows Program at UAB. He received his doctorate in Mathematics Education from Auburn University in 1989. Formerly, he served as a high school mathematics teacher in Columbus, Georgia.  Dr. Smith was elected president of the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1998-2000. He remains active in mathematics education organizations.  

His current research interests include the infusion of technology and modeling and visualization techniques in middle and high school mathematics education. He has served as a Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on several teacher enhancement grants supported and funded by Eisenhower and the National Science Foundation. These projects have involved working with middle and high school mathematics teachers across the Birmingham Metropolitan Area.
