Current Projects

UAB ADVANCE grant (2003-2005)

The UAB ADVANCE program is funded by the National Science Foundation for the purpose of creating institutional transformation by increasing the visibility of women’s issues and the recruiting and retention of greater numbers of women in the sciences and engineering. Role: senior faculty.

 

Project EQUAL (2002-2007)

Project EQUAL is designed to improve the teaching skills of teachers who work with students for whom English is not their native language. Teachers who successfully complete Project EQUAL will receive add-on ESL certification in the state of Alabama. This 5-year grant is a collaboration between the Shelby County School System and UAB. The project is funded by Office of English Language Acquisition, U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Abbott is the program evaluator for Project EQUAL.
 

 

McNair Scholars Program

The McNair Scholars Program was established in 1986 by Congress in honor of Dr. Carl McNair. Dr. McNair and his fellow astronauts died when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after take-off on January 28, 1986. The McNair Scholars Program is an academic support and enrichment program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). It will provide effective preparation for doctoral study to low-income, first generation college students, and students from groups underrepresented in graduate education. Dr. Abbott is the internal evaluator for the McNair Scholars Program.
