Elementary Education (ELE) Courses Offered

Undergraduate:

ELE 255  Elementary School Curriculum: Introduction Role of Elementary Teacher - Overview of elementary school curriculum, classroom management, and organization in elementary school. Planned observations required.

ELE 315  Elementary School Curric: Children's Literature - Materials and methods. Communication-based approach in developing effective language arts program. Needs of children, selection of books, societal issues in children's literature, and role of media in children's literature. Includes field experiences.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP.

ELE 316  Elementary School Curriculum: Language Arts - Communication-based approach in developing effective language arts program. All aspects of language arts program addressed.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP.

ELE 333  Art Experiences in the Elementary School -  Art concepts, methods, and skills for teaching art in elementary schools.

ELE 334  Music Experiences in the Elementary School -  Concepts of music, methods, and skills for teaching music in elementary schools.

ELE 380  Practicum I: Reading & Language Arts -  Assignment in elementary school classroom to teach selected topics in reading and language arts.  Prerequisites: Admission to TEP and prior or concurrent enrollment in ELE 316 and EDR 443; must be enrolled in at least one of these courses concurrently.

ELE 412  Elementary School Curriculum: Mathematics - Materials and methods of teaching mathematics. Scope, sequence, and content of mathematics program. Computational skills, problem solving, and discovery learning. Includes field experiences.  Prerequisites: Admission to TEP and six hours of mathematics.

ELE 413  Elementary School Curriculum: Science -  Scope, sequence, materials, and methods. Teaching and development of content and process skills. Field experiences required.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP.

ELE 414  Elementary School Curriculum: Social Studies -  Scope, sequence, and content of elementary school social studies curriculum. Teaching strategies, program articulation, and instructional planning. Field experiences required.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP.

ELE 415  Classroom Organization and Management -  Developing skills and techniques in classroom organization and management and becoming proficient in organization and utilization of educational media in classroom.  Prerequisites: Admission to TEP; must be taken concurrently with six hours of student teaching.

ELE 450  Elementary School Curric: Interdisciplinary Teaching Strategies -  Development of ability to select appropriate strategies for teaching.  Prerequisite: Admission to TEP.

ELE 480  Practicum II: Science and Social Studies -  Assignment in elementary school classroom to teach selected topics in science and social studies.  Prerequisites: Admission to TEP or Fifth Year Program, ELE 380, and prior or concurrent enrollment in ELE 413 and414 (must be enrolled in at least one of these courses concurrently).

ELE 490  Student Teaching in the Elementary School II -  Supervised teaching in elementary school (grades 3 -6).  Prerequisite: Approval of application for student teaching.


ELE 489  Student Teaching in the Elementary School I -  Supervised teaching in elementary school. Student may select assignment within either grades 1-3 or 4-6.  Prerequisites: ELE 315, 316, 412, 413, 414, and 415; EDR 440; and approval of application for student teaching.

 

ELE 491  Student Teaching in the Elementary School -  Supervised teaching in elementary school.  Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and department.

 

Graduate:

 

EEC 512 Mathematics in Elementary & Early Childhood Education -  Material and methods of teaching mathematics. Emphasizes scope, sequence, and content of the mathematics program. Computation skills and problem solving are stressed. Includes field experiences. Prerequisite: Admission to 5th-Year Program
 

EEC 513 Science in Elementary & Early Childhood Education -  Scope, sequence, materials, and methods. Emphasis on teaching and the development of content and process skills. Field experiences completed in conjunction with practicum. Prerequisite: Admission to 5th-Year Program.
 

EEC 514 Social Studies in Elementary & Early Childhood Education -  Scope, sequence, and content of elementary school social studies curriculum. Teaching strategies, program articulation, and instructional planning. Field experiences completed in conjunction with practicum. Prerequisite: Admission to 5th-Year Program.
 

ELE 620 Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School -  Issues and approaches in elementary mathematics; research and implementation for instruction.
 

ELE 621 Teaching Language Arts in the Elementary School -  Issues and approaches in teaching elementary school language arts. Implications of research for instruction.
 

ELE 622 Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School -   Function and organization of social studies programs in elementary schools. Selection and adaptation of content, resources, teaching materials, and strategies and methods. Emphasis on current trends.
 

ELE 623 Teaching Science in the Elementary School -   Issues and approaches in elementary science. Implications of research for instruction.
 

ELE 624 The Elementary School *-  Organizational patterns in American elementary schools.
 

ELE 690 Practicum in Elementary Education -  Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. 3 or 6 hours.
 

ELE 691 Internship in Elementary Education -  Full-time internship as elementary education teacher for 10 weeks (300 clock hours). Responsibility as teacher for at least 10 days. 3 or 9 hours.
 

ELE 721 Developing Effective Instruction in the Elementary School -  Leadership role of senior teachers; analysis and enhancement of instructional programs; development of teaching staff. Prerequisite: Master's degree.
