General Requirements

All students interested in obtaining a "Class B" certificate must make application for admission to the Teacher Education Program prior to the term in which they are completing prerequisites to the Teacher Education Program. Specific requirements for each major are listed below.

 

Early Childhood Education

To qualify for a baccalaureate degree and the Alabama "Class B" professional certificate in nursery school through grade three, students must complete 60 hours in general studies, including humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, health education, and physical education. Professional preparation includes courses in humanistic and behavioral studies, early childhood education, curriculum and teaching, evaluation of teaching and learning, and an internship. Each student must work closely with his or her advisor for appropriate selection of courses in each area in general and professional studies.

 

Elementary Education

To qualify for a baccalaureate degree and the Alabama "Class B" professional certificate in grades one through six, students must complete 60 hours in general studies, including humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, health education, and physical education. Professional preparation includes courses in humanistic and behavioral studies, elementary education, curriculum and teaching, evaluation of teaching and learning, and a 6-hour and a 9-hour internship. Each student must work closely with his or her advisor for appropriate selection of courses in each area in general and professional studies.

 

Middle School Education

An endorsement in middle school education is available in biology, chemistry, comprehensive science, earth and space science, economics, English, French, German, history, language arts, math, physics, political science, comprehensive social science, sociology, and Spanish. Students must have certification in elementary education or high school education. Students should see their advisors for available majors and courses.

 

High School Education

To qualify for a baccalaureate degree and the Alabama "Class B" professional certificate in a secondary education teaching field, students must complete 60 hours in general studies, including humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, health education and physical education. The high school program offers 14 certification areas for grades 7-12; biology, chemistry, English, French, comprehensive general science, German, history, comprehensive general science, German, history, comprehensive language arts, mathematics, physics, political science, comprehensive social science, sociology, and Spanish. Additional certification areas for grades N-12 are art, instrumental or vocal/choral music, speech communication/theater, French, German, Spanish, French & German, French & Spanish, and German & Spanish. All students are required to make two teaching majors except those selecting mathematics, comprehensive general science, comprehensive social science, comprehensive language arts, or any N-12 teaching field. The specific courses taken to satisfy general studies requirements will vary with each teaching field. Each student must see his or her assigned advisor to receive a list of appropriate general and professional studies in the humanistic and behavioral areas, curriculum and teaching, and an internship.
