Projects Directly Related to Job Description of Clinical Assistant Professor and School Counseling Advisor

Teaching

Off campus site visits, participatory interaction, and class interaction with community and university personnel afford students the opportunity to associate theory with “real world” experiences.  These initiatives encourage student independent thinking, creativity, and a greater appreciation for learning.  In order to facilitate such learning, site visits have included University Hospital, UAB Career Center, John’s Ridouts Funeral Home, Hanover House, Mary Lewis Convalescent Center, Birmingham Early Learning Center, and area school sites.  Participatory interactive visits have included  adventure based counseling initiatives.  Guest speakers from the following community agencies have been included in classes taught:  Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Birmingham City School System, Jefferson County School System, Hoover City School System, Shelby County School System, Alabama School Counselor Association, UAB School of Psychiatry, UAB Career Center, and the UAB School of Education.

 

Taught “Multicultural Counseling for School Counselors,” at Orot College, in Elkana, Israel.

 

Created web-site instruction (www.ed.uab.edu/counselor) along with Mr. Jeff Anderson (Academic Computing and Technology) and Dr. Rachelle Perusse of Plattsburg State University to develop intra-institutional student relationships and to enhance student learning in school counseling course ECG 622 (Group and Classroom Guidance in Schools).

 

Counselor Education Program Initiatives

1998  Developed, and Organize “Counselor Awareness Month” which

promotes the profession of counseling through activities and workshops involving counseling education students, community counseling professionals, and the Birmingham area general public.

 

1999    Represented the School of Education on Conflict Management proposal with the Center for Community Outreach Development (CORD), Stephen L. Hajduk, Ph.D., Director,1998-99.

 

1998    Initiated and organized first Counseling Comprehensive Exam utilizing School of Education Academic Computing and Technology Computer Lab.

           

School Counseling Program Initiatives

2000    Initiated the development of email assisted announcement mechanism for counseling students to improve communication between professors and students.

 

1998-99  Initiated, developed, and gained approval of revised Master’s Program in School Counseling.

 

1998    Created and developed school counseling cohort certification program in school counseling to service teachers in Birmingham City and other school systems who currently hold a Master’s Degree in an educational field.

 

1998    Initiated and developed ongoing meetings each Spring with teachers from Birmingham City School System and surrounding school systems to promote school counseling as a future career choice.

 

1998    Member, committee to develop mentorship program for first year/new school counselors, Jefferson County School System.
