Blended Masters in Secondary Education

You’re ready to grow to a new level as a middle- or high-school teacher. You have your certification, and you have some teaching experience under your belt. You’ve realized, though, that in your teaching you’re encountering problems you can’t solve and questions you can’t answer. You also want to know new and better ways to help your students achieve. UAB’s Masters in Secondary Education may be your next best step.

UAB’s secondary education faculty have implemented blended instruction as the delivery mode for our tradition master program. Blended Instruction (a combination of online learning & face-to-face instruction) will increase your flexibility for completing coursework around a schedule that fits you, decrease trips to campus, and ensure face-to-face quality learning that maintains strong interaction with course instructors and peers. The chief vehicle we will use for blending instruction will be Blackboard, course management software that has been in use by UAB School of Education faculty for over 5 years.

A special feature of UAB’s masters in secondary education is alignment with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Secondary faculty members from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction have already reformed the masters courses they teach so that the content helps students understand the national board standards and make progress on their national boards portfolio. You probably already know that achieving national board certification makes you eligible for a $5,000 salary supplement.

You can begin the program any semester, and we anticipate the program to require approximately 5 semesters to complete. Strong technology skills are not required. The only thing that is required, however, is resiliency. We are trying something new. Our students need to have a tolerance for change and a willingness to adapt.
