UAB Study Away, Italy

 

Upcoming program date: May 10-27, 2010

Location: Venice, Florence & Rome, Italy

 

Dr. Loucrecia Collins (UAB School of Education) will be leading a group to Italy in May 2010 to explore the differences in Educational Systems between the U.S. and Italy. This is a this once-in-a-lifetime cultural immersion and comparative educational experience offered in conjunction with EF Tours.

This course will provide students with an in-depth cross cultural experience based around lectures and presentations which will include topics on educational systems, social norms, linguistic diversity, and historical perspectives of two countries: Italy and the United States. Students will attend seminars in Birmingham both before and after the travel experience.

Dr. Collins and guest lecturers from the host sites will facilitate seminars in Italy. Lectures, field trips, group discussions, walking tours, selected readings, and social gatherings will provide the impetus for the educational experiences of this study group.

Itinerary:

Day 1  Flight : Overnight flight to Italy.

 

Day 2 Venice:  Arrive in Venice.  After clearing customs, you are greeted by your EF Tour Director, who will accompany you to your hotel and remain with you throughout your stay.

 

Day 3 Venice:  Begin your tour of la Serenissima at St. Mark’s Square, visit to the Doges’ Palace, and stroll over the Bridge of Sighs.

 

Day 4 Verona/Florence:  Walking tour of Verona. Transfer to Florence

Day 5 Florence:  Guided tour of Florence. Pass the classical statues of the Piazza della Signoria, visit the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, and visit the Accademia.

Day 6 Assisi/Rome:  Transfer via Assisi to Rome

Day 7 Rome : Visit the Vatican City, the world’s smallest country.


Day 8 Rome :  Guided sightseeing of Rome.

Day 9 Home: Transfer to the airport for return flight home.

Application Process:

This program is open to Graduate and Undergraduate students.  Student must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and enroll in EDF 363 or EDF 616.  Approval requires permission of Instructors and the UAB Study Away Program.

  1. Download the application for admission to the UAB Study Away program.

  2. Complete and return the application to the UAB Office for Study Away (Heritage Hall, Room 521),

  3. Visit www.eftours.com.  Click the "Students" tab at the top of the screen.

  4. Under "Get Started Today" enter the tour number. The EDL tour number is 766735.

  5. You will be prompted to enter your personal information as well as an emergency contact, and to make your first payment of $95.

  6. Once the above is complete, you are enrolled and an active participant on your College Study Tour.

The program fee (paid to EF tours) is valid for all who enroll by August 31, 2009 and includes: Round-trip air travel from Birmingham, AL, 7 overnight stays in hotels with private bathrooms, Complete European breakfast daily, Full-time EF Tour Director, UAB Faculty Leader, Whisper headsets, Audio guide for Vatican City, UAB Traveler Accident Insurance, Select guides and entrances to special attractions per itinerary.  This does not include UAB Tuition and Fees.
