UAB School of Education Alumni Society
The UAB School of Education hosts several events each year in addition to all the perks of joining the UAB National Alumni Society. Both organizations work closely to develop new fellowship activities, personal benefits, community outreach services, mentor programs, and other opportunities. The revenue generated through the Alumni Association allows us to provide scholarships to deserving students, plan programs to support our community, and create a network of partners through our UAB alumni.
The SOE Alumni Chapter has chosen to set high goals in 2008. Deciding to forego a holiday party last December, the chapter decided that account funds would be better utilized by sponsoring three scholarships for deserving SOE students. In addition, the chapter will expand its support of new UTEP graduates by providing them with essential supplies for their new classrooms. The School of Education Alumni Chapter is committed to supporting the continued growth and development of new teachers and plans to begin an online discussion group later in 2008 to mentor both SOE student teachers and recent graduates. Three current SOE students were awarded $500 scholarships for the spring semester. All three young women have something in common; they are single mothers who have a desire to improve the quality of life for themselves, their families and Alabama’s children.
In addition to lending financial support to these three young women, the SOE Alumni Chapter will also donate classroom supplies to three recent graduates of the Urban Teacher Education Project (UTEP). Supplies include flash drives, pens, highlighters, staplers and other necessary items for a functional classroom. New UTEP recipients include Bernetta Smith who is a Special Education Teacher at Bluff Park Elementary, in Hoover; Janice L. Johnson, a Math teacher at Gardendale High School and Amy Kasey, works at Corner Elementary School in a self-contained classroom. The SOE Alumni Chapter congratulates all of these students and recent graduates on their accomplishments.
